Designers of the Kovrov Plant named after V.A. Degtyarev E.V. Zhuravlev, M.Yu. Kutchin and V.I. Negrulenko have developed on the "bull pup" design con¬figuration the 12.7 mm magazine sniper rifle SVN-98. Then this rifle was named KSVK ("Kovrov large caliber sniper rifle") and, at last, ASVK ("army large caliber sniper rifle").
The free sliding barrel was manufactured via a cold forging and outfitted with the recoil compensator or a device combining functions of a muzzle brake and flash suppresor. The bolt is of a longitudinally sliding type with an operating handle located in front of the trigger guard. The heavy barrel, rugged receiver, and the manual reloading enhance the accuracy of fire. The operating handle is located on the right side. The thumb safety located on the right side of the receiver also serves as a fixator catch of its port.
The shoulder rest is provided with the elastic shock absorber. The unad-justable "cheek" is rigidly mounted on the receiver. The bipod is connected to the underbarrel rod.
There are various optical and night sights in addition to tumbling iron sighting devices. The magazine is of a detachable box-type, the guard plate on the forward part of the shoulder rest serves as a support of the left hand of a shooter. A separate carrying handle is located near the rifle's center of gravity.
The rifle is intended to hit lightey armored armament and combat materiel at a range of up to 1,000 meters and manpower in the individual armored means of protection at a range of up to 1,500 meters. However, the standard 12.7x108 Dshk cartridges can not reliably hit small-size targets with the first round at such ranges. Designers have developed under the guidance of V.N. Dvoryaninov (FGUP TsNIITOCHMASH) a special cartridge case 12.7 SN of the enhanced penetration capability within dimensions of the 12.7x107 standart cartridge case and better accuracy, its traverse radius of dispersion at ranges of up to 100 meters amounts to 4 cm.
